FOOD

We are what we eat and what we drink.  Even our thoughts and emotions are created from chemical processes in the body derived from the foods we eat. So, eating and foods manifest what we become - eating is a spiritual act! The process of nourishing ones self is as vital to our spirit as it is to our wellbeing.  It is when eating your nourish our bodies becomes entangled  with other issues that food becomes a source of pain and anguish or a source of abuse.

Food is something that defines our heritage, religion, values, culture and pleasure.  In fact, food rules started as early as Adam and Eve with the apple of sin.  Ah, we had the Forbidden Food! We allow certain foods on certain days of the week, days of the year, and only for special "occasions".  In comes temptation and denial - "you can't have that!"  Is the food rules that makes food such a charged subject?

Food causes such confusion. Low carb, high carb – low fat, high fat – low carb, the grapefruit diet, calorie restriction, liquid diets, Hollywood diet!  No wonder we are so confused.  It is only in the human animal that food is such a confusing topic.  Animals never debate the merits of a piece of food or whether it is an “allowed” food.  Animals are in touch with their innate eating guidance system.  We believe that humans can get back in touch with their own innate food guidance system to create the diet that supports our own bio-individuality.

So how do we mend our relationship with food?

At the very superficial level, food is required to sustain our lives.  We have to eat to live.  Food is required for life.  Therefore, food is not the enemy.

We have to recognize that food is more than its nutrient compounds and calories.  It is not just as simple as calories in and calories out.

Food is spiritual.  The act of eating nourishes us on a completely different personal level that we often do not even recognize.  The love or lack of love in growing, preparing and eating the food transpires to the quality of it and the one who eats it.

Food is not the enemy.  It is our subconscious thoughts and beliefs around food, self-nourishment and our “not good enough” thoughts that use food inappropriately.

For most people it is not just as easy as going on a diet to mend a broken relationship with food.  We have to change the diet as we change the thoughts, heart and soul of the person to heal and make self-nourishment a joy.
