We offer a variety of counseling and therapy options. We work with individuals, couples, families, and teens. Depression, anxiety, infertility, divorce recovery are a few of the issues that are appropriate for individual therapy. Marital problems, communication ups and downs, infertility realities, often rude awakenings for young marrieds, quiet challenges for empty nesters, and the unknowns of blended families are a few of the issues best suited for couples or family therapy.
Your counseling and therapy experience…
Our approach is unique for each individual, each couple, each family. Creative. Direct. Solutions-focused. Patient. Kind. Perhaps even humorous. Counseling and Therapy is hard enough, so let us make it can be a positive experience. Our space is warm, safe, and comfortable. Our approach is casual and welcoming. Our wish is your growth and fulfillment.
What can you expect from your first counseling and therapy session?
Intake and consent for treatment: You’ll fill out these forms ahead of session – either download them from our website – or fill them out in the waiting room. They’re standard office procedure for most that ask for information about you and require you to sign your consent to engage in the therapeutic relationship. Fees and office polices are also laid out.
Assessment: If you’re in our office for individual therapy – there’s likely something you’re in distress about. We’ll want to hear about how you define the problem. What are you looking for help with? If there are uncomfortable symptoms associated, we’ll want to assess the level of severity as well as know about your support system, your coping skills, etc. At some point we might talk a little more about how we work as it applies to your issue, give you a chance to ask me questions, etc.
You get to tell your story: We’ll ask you to tell me your story as how you think it might relate to your current problem. It may not be obvious to you and that’s ok. Our job is to put the pieces of your life puzzle to begin to look for possibilities. We’ll ask about your family of origin, important relationships, childhood and other questions. We likely won’t get your entire story in one session but we’ll begin to look at it.
Wrap Up: In the last few minutes of the therapy session, we will try to wrap things up by summarizing what information has been revealed. We will probably ask how you’re feeling after the session and offer you an opportunity to ask questions. If it feels like there is a good therapist-client fit then we’ll move forward together.
The counseling and therapy first session is really about information gathering and the very beginning of establishing the therapeutic relationship. We cannot stress the importance of the “therapeutic relationship.” Research has shown that this is one of the most important elements behind success for people in individual therapy. It is paramount that the highest level of trust and emotional safety is established in the environment of the therapy office. From there, we determine what support and visit frequency you need to move forward.
Counseling and Therapy Support Through Psychological Assessments
Dr. Humphrey also provides psychological assessments. Psychological assessments are administered to identify a wide range of functioning including our strengths, weaknesses, personality styles, and areas needing improvement. Assessment results help inform and enhance therapy, as well as determine whether medication might be helpful. In addition to utilizing standard clinical assessment instruments that pinpoint depression, anxiety, stress, personality features, attention deficit problems and body image issues, additional instruments are informative as well. Examples include emotional intelligence, resilience to stress, attitude and lifestyle, and relational compatibility.

Maybe it’s simply that you want your already great relationship to be spectacular and to have more me time everyday. Whatever your circumstances, goals or dreams might be, the bottom line is that your life is in transition.
