Vitamin IV Therapy: Everything You Need to Know

Benefits of Vitamin IV Therapy
April 9, 2020 0 Comments

You may have heard of Vitamin IV therapy from the tabloids— it has been used by a lot of celebrities to keep them at performance level or cure a hangover. You may have also heard about IV bars through a friend of a friend. But IV nutrition supplementation is more than just a passing fad.

Vitamin IV therapy, also known as IV nutrition supplementation, is the administration of amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and other essential micronutrients by intravenous infusion. This therapy enhances the regeneration aspects of medicine as well as repairs damage that has occurred to the biological processes of the body.

In recent years, more and more holistic, integrative, and functional medicine practices have found that many patients respond better to IV nutrition supplementation therapy than traditional oral supplements. Of course, there are a variety of ways that you can deliver micronutrients to your body, but providing these nutrients directly into the bloodstream via an IV is likely the most effective way. Since an IV directly provides nutrients into the bloodstream, obstacles in the digestive system that may prevent you from getting the necessary nutrients are bypassed.

And if you don’t find the answers you need here, no problem, you are welcome to call us any time  to talk with a member of the Living Well Dallas staff!

Let’s get started.

IV Nutrition Supplementation: Is It As Scary As It Sounds?

It already sounds a little scary. After all, you may have only equated IV’s with hospital visits or Emergency Room TV shows. But when performed by a capable, caring provider receiving a dose of IV therapy is actually quite simple and no worse than getting your blood taken or getting a booster shot. If needles aren’t your thing, you may need to do some relaxation exercises on your way in, other than that there is nothing to fear.

Aren’t Oral Supplements Enough?

You may have had a lot of luck with oral supplements like pills and liquids. Or you may not. Maybe it’s too hard for you to remember to take the daily dosages. Or perhaps your gut isn’t healthy enough to absorb the supplements. And even if your gut is healthy enough to absorb oral supplements, it can only absorb an average of 50% of the nutrients in the supplement, so you aren’t even getting the full dose. Researchers have also discovered that vitamins and minerals compete with each other in your stomach and intestines to see which ones are going to get absorbed. This makes taking oral supplements a gamble.

What’s in the IV bag?

The IV bag contains a combination of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and other natural ingredients that work together to optimize health and tackle specific conditions. You’re basically getting a nutrient cocktail customized by your doctor just for you. This vitamin cocktail contains a higher dosage of vitamins than you can get by eating foods or taking oral supplements. At IV bars and clinics, they may have pre-mixed cocktails already on hand. If you work with your healthcare provider, then they will create a cocktail to precisely addressing your specific needs.

How do the Vitamins Get Into Your System?

Your customized vitamin cocktail is suspended in a saline solution that will travel from the bag, down a tube, and directly into your bloodstream via an IV needle. A registered professional will need to access your vein to insert the needle. Make sure you are well-hydrated so that it is easy for the nurse or other healthcare professionals to gain access to your vein and secure the needle in place. After they secure the needle, they will start the drip and then will monitor it to make sure you are receiving your exact dosage. Because the nutrients are being delivered directly into the bloodstream, your body will be able to absorb approximately 90% of the nutrients.

How Long Will This Take?

The drip usually only takes about 20-30 minutes. Under special circumstances, it could take longer. Your provider will be able to give you a good estimate after deciding what treatment course to follow.

How Much Does It Cost?

If your doctor prescribes the treatment for a specific condition, then the cost may be covered by your health insurance plan. You will need to check with the insurance company about coverage. Out of pocket, a single IV drip costs around $100-$120 per nutrient. The price increases $100 per additional nutrient.

Are There Risks Involved with IV Nutrition Supplementation?

As with anything, there are some risks to consider before getting Vitamin IV nutrition supplementation. Here are three risks to consider:

  1. There is a risk of infection. Any time you have an IV inserted for any reason, it creates a direct path into your bloodstream. This bypasses your skin, which is your body’s first defense mechanism against bacteria. The risk of infection is unlikely, but you will want to talk with your healthcare provider before the therapy to assess this risk and ensure you have a healthy vitamin supplementation.
  2. You can overdose on vitamins and minerals. Although that sounds counter-intuitive, as with all good things, there is a point when too much is too much. For example, too much potassium can lead to a heart attack. That’s why it is crucial to work with a reputable healthcare provider when getting Vitamin IV therapy.
  3. Inflammation, bruising, and infection. These are all immediate reactions that may occur when receiving IVs of any kind. If you tend to be sensitive to procedures or medications, or you get a drip from a less-than-reputable facility, then you may be placing yourself at a higher possibility of risk for reactions.

Other risks include blood clots, vein irritation, and inflammation, the introduction of air embolisms, and fluid overload. That’s why, although IV Therapy can be ordered online and delivered to your home or office, a nurse will always be provided to administer the IV.

Who Should Avoid IV Therapy?

Although IV nutrition supplementation is safe, it may not be for everyone. If you have kidney disease, your body cannot remove certain electrolytes and minerals from the body very quickly, so adding high doses via an IV may not be a good idea. Or if you have specific heart or blood pressure conditions, you could be at risk of fluid overload from IV therapy, as well as salt overload, because the nutrients are contained in saline solution. If you have any other health conditions that prevent you from drinking large amounts of fluid, check with your healthcare practitioner as to whether or not IV nutrition supplementation is safe for you.

Can I Get IV Nutrition Supplementation Anywhere?

Vitamin IV therapy has become very popular. So popular that IV bars have pooped up across the country. Although these bars are convenient, we suggest going to your doctor or health and wellness clinic for Vitamin IV therapy. It’s essential for you to go over your medical history, medications, and any current conditions with your provider first, to allow them to create a customized vitamin IV cocktail, and then administer and monitor the IV drip for you.

5 Reasons to Get IV Nutrition Supplementation From A Doctor or Health and Wellness Clinic

  1. As we mentioned earlier, vitamins and minerals can be harmful in excess. In particular, fat-soluble vitamins that are stored in the body rather than excreted can build up to toxic levels. For example, large doses of vitamin A can cause liver and bone damage. Vitamin E in high doses can interfere with the absorption of other vitamins. Due to this, it is advised that you get IV nutrition supplementation from a healthcare professional.
  2. IV bars and clinics don’t have access to your medical records, so they would be unaware of any pre-existing conditions that you have that may be adversely affected by the IV drip or any other contraindications.
  3. You could be unknowingly receiving excess nutrients, which could have health implications, mainly if you receive intravenous nutrient injections regularly. Although safe levels for oral intake of vitamins and minerals have been established, absorption can vary between individuals. Some people cope with excess nutrients less well than others, so it is crucial that you work with a healthcare professional.
  4. There are no regulatory processes governing safety in IV bars and clinics. It is more likely that you will experience risks such as ‘air bubbles’ in the syringe that can transfer to the bloodstream, allergic reactions, and infection if the person administering the IV is not adequately qualified.
  5. Not all Vitamin IV Therapy distributors are the same. Some drips contain unneeded or questionable additives and are not made in an FDA-approved facility. Your doctor will only be using high-quality IV’s, saline solution, and nutrients.
