New therapy to help with menopause

55466803_MAs we get older, things don’t become easier. Let’s face it, the workouts become less frequent and when they do, it’s certainly not as easy. Or when you go on a walk with friends, you find yourself having to stop more than you ever did before because you’re out of breath, and that extra drink of water is essential. The clothes that you have fit in for years are starting to be a bit tighter, and as much as you don’t want to admit it, you may need a new, larger belt for your pants.

That feeling of change accompanies you into the office. Knowing that you are aging is an emotional, personal experience. The phrase is aging gracefully, but those people don’t know what your real-life stresses are about. The job climate today, frankly, isn’t great for those long-term career people who are starting to plan more and more for retirement when you have a new owner who is trying to see what efficiencies can be gained in your office. Your job is not your identity, let’s be clear about that. But it’s also something that you get a lot of intrinsic value in, let alone the financial and health benefits, and you want to be able to work those final years before retirement without worrying about downsizing happening to your department.

And of course, it extends into the home as well. There’s more arguing because the emotions are out of control, and you don’t know how to react. You’re not connecting as a couple like you used to. These are all signs of aging, which is natural, but still it’s something that can be concerning. The fights, when you have them, feel more personal, more biting in the words and tone of voice, because you’re feeling emotions on a greater level than ever before, and it’s starting to be even a bit annoying. Because this is real life, and you’re not going to be getting any younger any time soon.

We know that feeling, because we’re trained to notice the signs. And that’s why we are now offering Bio-Identical Hormone Pellet Therapy, with a first class scheduled for Sept. 26 with Nancy Scheinost, MD. Dr. Scheinost is a Functional Medicine Internist and Rheumatologist who is adding pellet therapy to her practice and with years of experience in infusion therapy, pellets are a natural fit for Dr. Nancy’s skill set.

This class will be for those who are experiencing the following;

  • Hot Flashes
  • Mood swings
  • Belly fat
  • Sleep issues
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Lost energy and stamina

What are Bioidentical Hormones?

They are not going to reverse aging completely, so this is not like you’re drinking from the Fountain of Youth. They are promoted as, compared to FDA-approved hormones, being safer; and because of that, it’s recognizable as to why women would want to try a new alternative. Bioidentical hormones have the same structure as what is naturally produced in the body hormonally, both from a chemical and molecular standpoint.

The North American Menopause Society reported in 2014 that about 1.4 million women were using bioidentical hormone treatment to combat symptoms of menopause whether through pellets, pills, patches, creams and shots.

Clearing up claims

While bioidentical hormones are molecular copies of hormones naturally produced by women, and they are created to help relieve the symptoms of menopause in aging women and other issues such as hot flashes or changes in skin tone, they are drugs. That’s because the FDA defines drugs as something that affects the structure of the body that is not food-based.

What’s a good dose?

Any type of hormonal treatment is done under close examination and care of a licensed doctor. More often than not, doses are given according to the needs of each individual, as described by a conversation with a doctor, although there is always the chance that doses can be adjusted as needed.

Are they safe?

Bioidentical hormones that have been approved by the FDA are tested beforehand for safety, and undergo testing that has strict standards for safety both in the level of dosage and the side effects of any quantity of dosage — which may happen upon the first dosage because of the new level of hormones that is in a patient’s body. If there are any side effects felt by a patient, the drug company that produces the hormone must report that.
