Gwen Shipe, MD grew up in Fort Worth, TX. She received her bachelor degree in Community Health Education from Texas A&M University in 1983. She then worked in healthcare practice management in the Dallas Fort Worth area until, at age 39, she began her medical training at University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, KY. She moved to Jackson, MS for her Psychiatry Residency program and completed her Child Psychiatry Fellowship in 2009 at UT Southwestern Dallas. Over the last few years, she has started her training in functional medicine and is a candidate for certification with the Institute for Functional Medicine in 2019. Gwen Shipe is especially interested in using functional medicine as a means to get to the root cause of her patient’s issues and resolving them.
She began her child, adolescent and adult psychiatry practice sharing an office with a well-known pediatrician in the Preston Center area of Dallas. In 2013 she began sharing a suite with several other mental health professionals in the same building.
In September 2017, Gwen Shipe, MD joined Living Well Health & Wellness Center. She brings her specialty of functional psychiatry to a team of other physicians, pharmacists, nutritionists, therapists, coaches, and wellness specialists who together offer a fresh, holistic consortium of lifestyle medicine expertise.
Gwen Shipe’s specialty is assisting those who wish to safely and comfortably wean from their psychotropic medications by outlining a personal protocol designed to minimize withdrawal symptoms while simultaneously treating any underlying functional disorders that contribute to mental and emotional destabilization through the methods of functional medicine. Her goal is patient restoration to optimal cognitive and emotional health.
Through this sometimes lengthy process, her patients will be working with other Living Well Dallas team members who will coordinate other elements of lifestyle medicine to support the successful medication wean.
